Personal Protective Equipment (PPE

Safety harnesses are essential for any operator of mobile elevating work platforms. They are a core element of personal fall protection equipment, used together with shock-absorbing lanyards, connectors compliant with EN 362, and an anchorage point that meets EN 795 standards.

This type of equipment is designed to protect individuals working in areas where there is a risk of falling, and where alternative safety solutions - such as organizational changes eliminating the need to enter danger zones or collective protections like guardrails and safety nets - cannot be implemented.

How do safety harnesses work?

Safety harnesses are the only permitted devices for securing the body when using personal fall protection equipment. Commonly referred to as PPE harnesses, they must comply with the EN 361 standard. They are made of high-strength webbing, stitched and joined using secure buckles and adjustment mechanisms.

How to use safety harnesses safely?

The regulations governing working at heights - and by extension the use of safety harnesses - are outlined in the Regulation of the Minister of Labour and Social Policy. According to this regulation, safety harnesses must be worn during any work performed at a height of at least 1 meter above the ground or floor level.

Harnesses must be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions included with each set. Regular inspections, proper maintenance, and appropriate storage are essential. A full PPE set, including harness, helmet, safety glasses, and protective footwear, is mandatory for every operator.

How often should safety harnesses be inspected?

Every set of fall protection PPE - including safety harnesses - must have a user logbook, which records details such as:

  • serial number,
  • user’s name,
  • production date,
  • date of first use,
  • inspection records,
  • and notes about equipment withdrawal.

Only a qualified person is authorized to make entries in the logbook.

Once harnesses are put into use, they must undergo a formal inspection at least once every 12 months. These inspections should be carried out by individuals with the necessary knowledge and experience to evaluate the equipment’s condition and safety effectively.

Before every use, regardless of inspection status, visual checks should be conducted to ensure there are no abrasions or mechanical damage that could compromise safety during work at height.

You’ll learn all these details and more during the Boels Harness Inspection Training.
