Boels rental

Name of the service provider: Boels Rental
Service (s) to which the declaration of conformity relates to: Boels.com.

Introduction

Boels strives to make its services accessible to everyone, in line with our vision on inclusion.

The European Accessibility Act (EU 2019/882) is a directive of the European Union aimed at improving the accessibility of products and services for people with disabilities. Adopted in 2019, the directive’s goal is to ensure that people with disabilities can more easily participate in society and the workforce across all EU countries by reducing or removing barriers in various areas, including digital services.

For digital services, the EAA refers to standards like EN 301 549, which in turn requires WCAG 2.1 AA conformance. WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) is a set of international guidelines developed by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) that define how to make web content more accessible, especially to people with disabilities.

The latest stable version is WCAG 2.1 (with 2.2 released in 2023). Organized around four principles: Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust (POUR). Contains testable success criteria at three levels: A, AA, AAA. (resource: https://www.w3.org/WAI/standards-guidelines/wcag/)

We continuously strive to improve the accessibility and usability of our website in compliance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level A and AA.

Service

Boels Rental is one of the largest rental companies in Europe. This includes both equipment rentals and specialist rentals. We offer access to the largest and broadest range of modern and top quality equipment and tools.

Boels.com is our digital e-commerce web environment for individuals and business users who want to rent equipment. The boels.com website offers personalized content with all information needed. That support in selecting and renting the right equipment and/or finding the nearest Boels location.

Guideline scope

In order to begin our journey towards a more inclusive environment, we had to scope the number of guidelines to take into account. We used the findings of a quick scan performed by an external partner to determine those. We selected the following accessibility guidelines:

  • Screen Reader Compatibility (perceivable, 1.1). Non-text information is available to more people. What to do? Create a text alternative for visual and auditory content. Why it's important? People who can’t fully see or hear content can understand it.
  • Colour Contrast & Readability (perceivable, 1.4). Text can be seen by more people. What to do? Provide sufficient contrast between text and its background. Why it's important? Some people cannot read faint text.
  • Keyboard Navigation (operable, 2.1) Everything can be done with a keyboard except freehand movements. What to do? Ensure pointer actions have a keyboard equivalent. Why it's important? Many people rely on the keyboard interface, including blind and some mobility impaired people.

Methods used to assess conformity

Manual tests were performed. Furthermore, tools such as chrome inspector, siteimprove accessibility checker and windows narrator were used.

Results

  • Keyboard Navigation – Most parts of our site can be navigated using a keyboard without requiring a mouse.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility – Our content is partly structured with proper headings, labels, and alternative text for images to enhance usability for screen reader users.
  • Colour Contrast & Readability – Contrast between text and background is improved (4.5:1) to ensure readability.

(Research) Constrains

We improve the accessibility of our website. However our research set up has two limitations: guideline & page scope. As a consequence it’s not feasible to determine whether we are WCAG 2.2 level A and AA compliant for all guidelines.

How to go forward to improve conformity?

We have set up a plan to systematically check all guidelines on level A and AA for the following pages: homepage, product list page, product detail page, cart, check out funnel step 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Based on findings the next step(s) will be defined.

Furthermore, when implementing new features we take the three aforementioned guidelines into account.
